Reservoirs to Visit Near Melbourne

Reservoirs are pleasant recreational locations to visit. Apart from panoramic vistas over the water, there are usually walks, picnic facilities, sometimes a playground to entertain the kids and often wildlife such as kangaroos and wallabies can be seen, particularly towards dusk.
Ninety percent of Melbourne's water comes from protected wilderness areas. Public access to these catchment areas is restricted to keep the water free of contaminants. The remaining ten percent of drinking water comes from Sugarloaf Reservoir Park, which which draws water locally from the Yarra River. Because water leaving the reservoir is fully treated, some recreational activity (fishing) is allowed at this reservoir.
Dogs are sometimes permitted on leash. Check the conditions for each reservoir.
Reservoirs usually have set opening times which vary with the season.
Many reservoirs do not have drinking water, so be self-sufficient with drinking water.
