100 Activities for Babies and Toddlers in Melbourne
Sometimes it can be a bit tricky to find activities for babies and toddlers but Melbourne has a good range of things to do for children of this age. We have ignored the distraction from the screaming of babies, toddler temper tantrums and crawlers escaping to open up all the cupboards within reach to seek out all the activities suitable for babies, crawlers and toddlers.
Museum of Play and Art (Sandringham)

Notes: The Pauline Gandel Children's Gallery at Melbourne Museum is a fantastic place for children up to 5-year-old to explore, play and learn. Whether you excavate fossils in the dinosaur dig, explore the discovery garden, examine specially selected museum objects, dance in the 'camouflage disco' where children will turn into spotty and stripy disco dancing animals or get tangled in the climbing net, young kids will be captivated. There are other areas of the museum might also appeal to toddlers such as 'Bugs Alive' and there are plenty of interactive exhibits to keep kids of any age engaged.
Collingwood Childrens Farm (Abbotsford)

Opening Times: Open every day of the year from 9am to 5pm. First Sunday of each Month is Family Day: There are free pony rides, hay rides, a BBQ and activities matching the monthly theme.

Notes: Plenty of paddocks where the kids can get close to a range of farm animals such as goats, chickens, horses, cows, geese, pigs and guinea pigs. During the day there are activities such as cow milking and guinea pig cuddles. There is a cafe on-site and extra activities once a month on Family Day. There is a Farmer's Market on the second Saturday of each month from 8am to 1pm. Entry is $2 per adult and free for children and you can stay all day at the farm.
Melbourne Zoo (Parkville)

Notes: The zoo has a wonderful animal experiences and a range of activities which would keep a toddler interested such as the meerkat sandpit where kids can burrow in the sand looking for bugs and a water play park. Plan your time around special activities such as feeding times to make it even more interesting.
The Keeper Kids program is free and provides a simulated experience as a zoo keeper or a vet with dress-ups and props.
Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium (Central Melbourne)

Cost: A combination of free and paid workshops and events.
Notes: ArtPlay is a place where children, from babies to 12 year olds, can explore their creativity and share unique artistic experiences with professional artists. There are more than 300 workshops, events and performances every year. Bookings are required for most workshops, however there are also free drop-in events available. There is a nice playground next to the building.
National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) (Central Melbourne)

Notes: There are two branches of the NGV which are close together, the International galleries on St Kilda Road and the Australian galleries at Federation Square. There are always child friendly events at both locations. At the Alexander Calder Workshops, kids can create cardboard animal sculptures and the NGV Under 4s program has hands-on making activities suited to toddlers aged 2-4. There is a nice garden at the rear of NGV International which has picnic facilities and sculptures.
Storytime at Libraries

Opening Times: Storytime sessions vary by Library. They are generally not held during school holidays.

Notes: Most libraries have free storytime sessions aimed at different age groups. Preschool Story Time, aimed at children aged 3-5 years is usually a mix of stories songs, activities and rhymes.
Bundoora Park Childrens Farm (Bundoora)

Water Play Parks

Ian Potter Foundation Children's Garden (Central Melbourne)

Closed to the public Monday-Tuesday during Victorian State School terms for booked school groups only. Each year the Children's Garden takes a break in winter for regular maintenance and restoration for eight weeks following the end of July school holidays.

Notes: A fenced spot for kids who love getting their hands dirty in the garden. There are lots of fun places to explore including the Ruin Garden, the Meeting Place (which has a water feature that sprays up out of the ground in summer), a Wetland Area, Bamboo Forest, The Gorge, Plant Tunnel, Kitchen Garden and The Rill (a gentle waterway that runs through the Garden). The garden is located in the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne which has lovely areas including punting tours on the lake which are free for kids up to 5 years old (and for well behaved dogs).

VJunior Cinema for Kids (Southland, Cheltenham)
Address: 1239 Nepean Highway, Cheltenham. There are other VJunior cinemas at Fountain Gate, Narre Warren, Knox, Wantirna South, Plenty Valley, Mill Park and Sunshine.

Cost: Standard ticket prices are around $23 for an adult and $15 for a child aged 3 to 14 years (inclusive). Children under 3 are free provided they sit on a parent/guardian's lap at all times. Cheaper options are available online.
Notes: The Village Cinemas VJunior experience includes new release family films with modified volume and lighting levels with an intermission for selected sessions, playtime with Hot Wheels tracks and cars, Mega Bloks wall and interactive digital screens before the film, a slide in the cinema, choice of standard, beanbag or reclined lounge seats and a specialised menu for kids.
Legoland Discovery Centre (Chadstone)

Notes: This Lego wonderland is mainly suited to slightly older kids but there is a Duplo Kids Club designed for kids under 5. It is an interactive play-based workshop where they learn numbers, colours and animals with Duplo.

Notes: There are plenty of interactive displays which any toddler will love to touch, push and pull. The 'Ground Up: Building Big Ideas, Together' is an exhibition for babies to five-year-olds where curiosity is rewarded around with surprising and intriguing sights, sounds and touch sensations. Its designed to encourage the problem solvers of tomorrow. There is also 'Little Kids Day In' event scheduled for some days with activities, museum exhibits, shows and storytelling for children and parents to get involved in. Notes: There is a soft play toddler area suited to children 4 years and under, an indoor playground for the little ones and spaces for the young ones to ride little vehicles around. The play centre has two adjoining kid friendly cafes.

Cost: $5 per person
Notes: Children can get up close and personal with farm animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, lambs, kids, calves, chickens and a border collie sheep dog. Kids can hold some of the animals, give them a feed or even put a chicken on top of their head!
