Pipemakers Park Play Space, Van Ness Avenue, Maribyrnong
A lovely playground which is nature based and has Indigenous themes throughout. Two massive tunnel slides tower over the playground. The first slide can be reached by a rope tunnel ladder and a high log ladder leads to the other slide.
Around the bottom of the slide towers is a cubby, rope ladders, climbing wall, hanging disk traverse and metal slide. Around the base there is also a log frame climbing area, concrete pipe tunnel, stand on spinner, cup to sit in and spin around, small birds nest swing, two standard swings, pipes to hit a clanger against and drums.
To the side is a little metal slide and a huge sandpit with a sand play table, indigenous fishing net frame, hammock, balance beam and springer. On the side is a hand pump for a water play area (not working when we visited).
There is a camp fire area with indigenous art around the outside. The area has a few tables and seats, water tap, toilets and big grassy area. There are no BBQs.
The play ground is located about 70 m from the Maribyrnong River and care needs to be taken with younger kids. Close by is a beautiful History of the Land Gardens with interesting displays and gorgeous mosaics. This is a great place to explore.
The nature playspace has been designed to connect children and their families with nature. The theme 'Layers of Country' was developed by Wurundjeri artist Mandy Nicholson and refers to the ongoing spiritual connection Traditional Owners have to Country. The play space is constructed around the six layers of country.
Tharangalk Biik (Star Country):
Where Bunjil, the Eagle, our Creator Being lives with his helpers.
Wurru Wurru Biik (Sky Country):
Where we see our Spirit Protectors and Creator Beings in their physical form.
Murnmut Biik (Wind Country):
Where smoke from our fires and our language travels between groups and to Bunjil.
Baanj Biik (Water Country):
Where there is water, there is life. Water plays a big role in our Welcome ceremony.
Biik-dui (on Country)
Where we walk, dance and perform ceremony as well as grow our food.
Biik-ut (Below Country)
Where we get our ochre from to decorate our bodies for dance and ceremony.
