W.R. Ruthven V.C. Reserve Playground, Malpas Street, Preston
A lovely landscaped corner of the reserve which is tightly packed and full of experiences - especially for younger kids. There is a fun structure with metal slide, climbing wall and steps which has cute characters such as the alphabet snake and chameleon. This area also has a sea-horse springer, big metal pipes to hit, I mean thump, to make a range of noises, flying fox, round sandpit, red and white toadstools and a carousel which you sit on and spin super fast. The carousel has been perfectly designed because it is surrounded by a soft spongy base to cater for all the kids who get so dizzy that they stagger off and collapse on the ground.
In another corner is a very lie structure for the youngest kids with tunnel, shop front, fun panels and a swirling disk with red and white circular lines which captivates any one who spins the disk around with its whirling patterns. Next to this is a hopscotch area and blackboard.
Dividing the playground is a superb rock wall with beautiful wooden seats. Across a path is an area which could keep older kids entertained with a big metal climbing frame and a set of five swings including a birds nest swing. A little sit-on rocker is also in this area.
A number of shady trees dot the playground area. There is only one unshaded table (needs more) and some unshaded seating. There are toilets and a water tap and the playground is located next to an oval.
