Wombat Bend Playspace, Duncan Street, Templestowe Lower
A cracker! Not a huge amount of play equipment but it is beautifully crafted together amidst a nicely landscaped area. There is a variety of play equipment for different sizes and abilities.
There is a wooden maze with mirrors and buttons to press. Our kids had a ball pressing the buttons and listening to the funny voices. Also musical bridge, sandpit (with water pump), family sized see-saw, cube with rope climbing frame on side and top, two real flying foxes, stand-on spinning disks, double slides down a small embankment, hidden cubby and a fantastic bat wing carousel with hanging seats which parents push around. The thrill of the ride depends on how energetic the parents are!
The playground has a native garden with paths galore. There is a BBQ, water tap and a few sheltered tables inside but lots of picnicking opportunities along the river outside. Toilets. There are plenty of bushes and trees and you will be able to find some shaded places.
Wombat Bend is fenced with a child proof gate and embraces inclusive designs to demonstrate best practice in providing a play space for people of all abilities. Finns Reserve connects to the Main Yarra Trail via a swing bridge and is also the start of the Ruffey Creek Linear Trail.
You can try building your own cubby house from bush materials in the nature play area (east of the playground).
Starting at the suspension bridge at the Yarra River in Finns Reserve, the Westerfolds Park to Templestowe Village Walk passes through bushy parkland leads to a steep climb where you finish at Templestowe Village.
Outside the fenced play space is Finns Reserve which is a dog off leash area. Put your dog on a lead within 15 metres of the playground, BBQ area or where a sporting event is in progress. For the safety of children, the Wombat Bend fenced playspace is a dog free zone. There is also an outdoor gym near the playground.
