Wombalana Wild Garden Playground, Minak Road, Selby
Nestled amongst the trees is a wonderful playground for young kids which is fully fenced and shared with Selby Community House next door.
The highlight is a magnificent mechanical Diprotodon. Climb a rope ladder to get a chance to drive this monster from high above the playground.
The mechanical Diprotodon is a future landscape building machine imagined by industrial designer Stephen Mushin.
Modelled on the 40,000 year old megafauna wombat of the same name, this mechanical diprotodon is a soil excavating and habitat-making machine fuelled by bio-gas produced from the waste it consumes. It has four excavator arm-legs for digging, an excavator bucket-head for breaking apart waste, a large rear facing pouch (as all wombats do), a control turret and a large compost producing square bottom.
Although its head is much larger than the original animal, the body is roughly the same size; diprotodons were over 2m tall at the shoulder, up to 4m long and weighed 3,000kg. Although none have ever been found, diprotodons probably dug tunnels the size of concrete storm water drains.
There is also a big sandpit under shade sails with a mud kitchen and plenty of toys to play with and a big jumble of logs to climb on. The playground is packed full of tree ferns.
The playground has one gate to the Community House and another gate for the public. There are various paths to the playground from beside the Community House and Charles Street near the tennis courts.
There are toilets outside the gates and a table beside the path to the playground from Charles Street.
Opening Hours:
The playground is closed to the public from 10am-2pm Monday to Friday during the school term.
