Willum Warrain Aboriginal Association (Hastings)
Willum Warrain Aboriginal Association seeks to provide a safe, cultural space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to gather on the Mornington Peninsula. We welcome everyone who comes through our gates. We have many non-Indigenous kin, friends and supporters who are members too.
Willum Warrain Aboriginal Bush Nursery is a 100% Aboriginal community-owned bush nursery specialising in local indigenous plants from the Mornington Peninsula. Many of the plants we sell have cultural uses and meanings for Aboriginal peoples in South East Australia.
We are the only Aboriginal-run nursery retail and wholesale nursery south of Melbourne open to the public. We are very keen to take on larger orders (with warning) from businesses and agencies seeking to achieve Reconciliation Action Plan goals and meet procurement targets.
You can drop in weekdays throughout the school term and purchase plants - we are currently growing over 100 species. Please see our exciting range of top 5 Deadly Plants (murnong, lomandra, chocolate lily, appleberry, karkalla) and our top 5 wetland and top 5 bush flower selections.
We seek not to just sell plants but share cultural knowledge - every plant has its own dreaming. The vast majority of the plants we sell are growing in our Koorie Plant Trail and Pun Pun (billabong) area and can be viewed in situ. We are aiming over time to completely source all seed and propagation stock from our premises and take the pressure of local remnant reserves which are increasingly endangered by over-harvesting and weed infestation.
Cultural Immersion Tours
Would you like to learn more about Aboriginal culture?
Willum Warrain offers tours of our Gathering Place for Pre-School, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary groups, community organisations, agencies and businesses.
Visit the home of the local Aboriginal community on the Mornington Peninsula for an authentic cultural experience. Programs could include a welcoming ceremony and yarning/discussion in the Ngargee area; story-telling; dance; learning about our Koorie Bush tucker trail, traditional huts, material culture (possum skin cloaks, coolamons, woomeras and spears, etc.); cultural awareness including the impacts of colonisation, Stolen Generation, Treaty, First Nations' cultural diversity, reconciliation, etc.
Cultural Awareness Tours & Training
Many community, government, philanthropic or corporate entities have committed to upskilling their members' and workforces' understanding and knowledge of First Nations' cultures, histories and contemporary realities via their Reconciliation Action Plans.
Willum Warrain can provide a package tailored to your organisation's needs and drive awareness and change around achieving reconciliation goals. Willum Warrain has run cultural awareness training for many organisations large and small both at a senior management and workforce level.
