Williamstown Beach
The Williamstown beach is 550 m long and runs between Thompson Street and Bayview Street Williamstown. The beach is accessed from Williamstown Beach train station.
There's a wide range of facilities and services, including a sandy swimming beach in a non-boating area, cafes, public toilets, picnic facilities, playgrounds and rotunda.
Swimming is safest at the western end where the Williamstown Swimming and Surf Life Saving Club patrols the beach and the bar is relatively shallow. There are many rocks at the Pavilion end of the beach, and the holes off the end of the rock groyne are a danger to non-swimmers.
Williamstown beach has a General Beach Hazard Rating of 2/10 (Least hazardous).
Review:
A lovely wide sandy beach which is patrolled by the Williamstown Swimming and Surf Life Saving Club. Stay within the patrolled area and stay clear of the groynes (rock walls) at each end of the beach.
At the west end there is a smallish triangle of sand next to a rock wall which provides a sheltered, fairly shallow area of water. This opens out to the main beach to the east.
There are toilets, water tap and showers at the west end of the beach next to The Kiosk d'Asporto which serves southern Italian food and gelato. All flavours are traditional, including pistachio, vanilla and chocolate, as well as berry and citrus sorbets. You can enjoy it by the cup, cone or a gelato slider.
The extreme east end has a drain pipe and groyne (rock wall) and it is best to swim outside this area.
At the east end of the beach is Shelley's Beach Pavilion restaurant (formerly Sirens) which serves modern Australian dishes in a bright, airy restaurant with outdoor tables and beach views and Rotunda In Williamstown restaurant / cafe.
Opposite the beach, at the corner of Forster Street and the Esplanade is the Promenade By The Bay cafe.
The east end has public toilets and water tap. Opposite the beach there is a playground at Sadler Reserve and to the east of the beach is another playground at Hatt Reserve.
There is quite a lot of ticketed parking (8am - 8pm) which is $3/hr or $11.70 all day. Limited free parking is available in the side streets off the Esplanade.
