Weroona Bay is the Portsea bay beach and one of the more popular bayside beaches, with most people content to walk out on the pier, or in summer swim at the beach. The more adventurous can go out on the dive boats from the pier. The beach is bordered by Commonwealth land to the west and Point Franklin to the east, faces north and is 1,200 m long.
The Nepean Highway and the town of Portsea parallel the back of the bay. The one hundred metre long Portsea Pier lies in front of the centre of the town, and numerous boats are moored in the bay.
Waters are usually calm off the beach, with strong northerly winds required to produce low wind waves. Strong tidal currents flow past Point Franklin, but reduce in strength toward the beach. The beach is relatively narrow and steep, with deep water close inshore at high tide.
Swimming - Relatively safe at the beach, with boat traffic and tidal currents increasing offshore.
Weerooma Bay beach has a General Beach Hazard Rating of 2/10 (Least hazardous). The beach is unpatrolled.
Review:
During the peak season between December 24 and April 30 there is two hour free parking between 8am and 6pm. At other times of the year the parking is free all day.
There is a playground near the Portsea Pier General Store and the beach which has shaded tables, BBQs, water tap and toilets.
The centrepiece of the beach is the Portsea Pier. To the east of the pier is a row of sandbags to protect the beach from erosion. This is a temporary solution until a more permanent solution is implemented. Depending on the tide and waves/wind a lot of the beach might be covered in water. Even so there is still a sandy area to the east of the sandbanks. There is a line of rocks parallel to the sandbags in the sea and there are some jagged wooden posts in the water. Be careful of these when swimming in this area. After 100 m you come to a rocky point. To the west of the pier is a path along a rock-wall which leads to a narrow sandy beach (about 200 m long) with beach huts. This ends in a sea-wall and a big point.
Access for Dogs:
Dogs on leash are permitted on the foreshore except between 9am and 7pm during Daylight Savings Period. At other times dogs are permitted on-leash.
