Warragul - Indigenous Art Garden

Warragul - Indigenous Art Garden

The indigenous garden in Rotary Park was inspired by the artwork of local artist Eileen Harrison.

Warragul - Indigenous Art Garden

The project celebrates 100 years of Rotary service in Australia. It aims to provide insight into the culture of the Kurnai people and build stronger connections with the land we live on and with each other.

The garden comprises six paths leading to a central meeting place for elders to pass on their knowledge to the young.

The outer circle represents a celebration of education and learning about Kurnai culture, while totems throughout the garden represent birds and animals important to the Kurnai people. Animal footprints inlaid in concrete tell indigenous stories in the tracks of the garden. There are bird patterns burned into totems, rocks representing the sun, moon and stars and plants in an open forest.

Moving from the centre of the circle to the outside, seventeen stumps represent elders who share knowledge with young people, the learning that occurs and then celebration of the learning.
