Wandong Walking Trail
Take the Wandong Walking Trail and learn about our past history. Several of our original buildings remain but unfortunately much of our past has disappeared. Some imagination will be necessary during your walk to conjure up images of what the town must have looked like in the early 1900s. Collect your free Walking Trail map and information guide at one of the stores opposite before setting out or use the information below.
The starting point for the walk is Lion's Club Park next to Wandong train station.
1. Lions Park/Travellers Rest
2. Wandong Railway Station & Railway Yards
Extensive rail sidings for the timber and brick industries.
3. Stationmaster's Home - Built in 1900.
4. Coffee Palace & Bakery - Prior to dismantling in 1969 this building served as a 14 room boarding house.
5. Wandong Hall - Built in 1902 and first known as the Wandong Mechanics Institute and Free Library.
6. Seasoning Works Manager's Homes - Two homes for managers built of terra cotta lumber brick.
7. Timber Home - Part of this residence is from the original Coffee Palace Boarding House.
8. St. Michael's Church - Built in 1893 with local terra cotta lumber bricks at a cost of 365 pounds.

11. McDonald's Farm (Mac's Farm) - Separated Wandong and Heathcote function until it was sub-divided in 1972.
12. St. John's Church - Built in 1933. See Site #21. The original church, built in 1890, was destroyed by fire in 1932.
13. Timbercutter's Home - Built in the early 1900s.
14. Timber Home - Jack Harper, Mt Disappointment sawmill operator, lived here.
15. L.B. Davern Reserve - Oval, tennis, basketball, netball, playground, community centre.
16. Horse-drawn Tram Line - Built in 1888 to bring timber from Mt Disappointment, following Dry Creek, to the Wandong Seasoning Works.
17. Timber Company & Seasoning Works -Opened in 1889 to process timber from Mt Disappointment.
18. Police Officer's Home - Built in the late I800s and demolished in 2004 after falling into disrepair.
19. Railway Bridge - The original bridge, built in 1899, was replaced by the current bridge in 1961.
20. Cyanide Works & Market Gardens - The former serviced the many gold mines in this area and the Chinese operated a market garden in this area.
21. Original Site, St John's Church - Destroyed by fire in 1932 and rebuilt at the present site in Wandong Avenue (Site #12).
22. First Brick Home - Originally named "Fairholm" and changed to "Windamingle", this home was built using terra cotta lumber brick (circa 1892).
23. Traveller's Rest Hotel Site - Two stories, built in 1888 but destroyed by fire in 1933.
24. Store Site - Originally opened as Ryan's Store in 1873.
25 Wandong Plaza - Opened in 2004.
26. Jackson's Store, Original Site - The first store opened here in 1876 and closed in the early 1900s.
27. Brick Works Site (& Clay Pit) - The Victoria Terra Cotta Lumber Company was formed in 1889 and made bricks of sawdust and clay.
28. Hall - The former Hall of terra cotta lumber bricks stood here.
