Vaughan - Red Knob Gold Mining Landscape

These dramatic cliffs near Vaughan, known as Red Knob, are the result of hydraulic sluicing operations in the mid 20th century.

Hydraulic sluicing is a gold mining process which uses high pressure jets of water to blast away earth and wash it down to run through a sluice box where gold gets caught.

Arthur Bradfield and his sons George and Ray used hydraulic sluicing to extract gold from this area and create the striking landscape that exists today.

There are spectacular views over the valley from the roadside lookout. It is possible to walk down into the valley but the tracks are quite indistinct and care needs to be taken.

Red Knob is located to the left of Greville Street when travelling from Vaughan to Chewton (just before New Year Flat Road).
