Valley Reserve Play Space, Waimarie Drive, Mount Waverley
A superb natural play space in Valley Reserve which has terraced levels and naturally blends into the surrounding bush. It includes rope climbing courses, tree houses, flying foxes, swings, slides, ropes, logs, sandpits and a dry water course.
The centre piece of the playground are the adventurous elevated ropes courses in a forest of climbing poles and rope nets with rope and log bridges which join cubbies perched on the poles.
At the higher level of the playground are two flying foxes (one with disk seat and another with a more enclosed seat). The flying foxes can easily pick up a nice pace with a bit of pushing but are quite difficult to move back along the wire to the starting position. An elevated platform with rope ladder and high fireman's pole overlooks this part of the playground. There is also a large stone carving representing an owl.
On the edge of the playground is a huge birds nest swing which provides a massive swinging pendulum. It swings so high that some training at NASA is almost a pre-requisite before going into orbit on the swing.
There are also two round, wooden disks on springs and a huge wooden cockatoo.
At the lower level is an area more suited to younger kids which has a huge parrot metal climbing frame, rope traverse at a low height, two swings (one without a safety chain and the other with a harness), a lovely wooden carousel, sandpit, a low cubby which is accessible by rope ladders, a wave slide and a shelter with table and wooden logs for seats.
There are two other shelters with tables plus two unshaded BBQs. At the eastern end are two unshaded tables, tables and chairs constructed from tree stumps and a tap at the head of a rocky dry watercourse which leads to a sandpit which has a huge block of quartz in the middle. The block has holes and lines etched into the top to catch water and attract insects and other bugs. There is a beautiful sculpture of a long necked turtle on the side of the sandpit.
This area has a row of stumps of different heights to jump along and another huge block of quartz.
The whole play space is beautifully landscaped using natural materials such as big rocks, stumps and logs.
There are toilets next to the car park. The play space is located just north of the car park.
