Traralgon - Gippsland Plains Rail Trail
The Gippsland Plains Rail Trail extends 63km from Traralgon to Stratford in Central Gippsland. The trail passes through high quality dairy country, and offers panoramic views of the Great Dividing Range to the north, and sweeping 360 degree views across the Great Gippsland Plains.
The Gippsland Plains Rail Trail is unique, as visitors can easily connect by V-line train from Melbourne or Bairnsdale to either end of the trail (Traralgon and/or Stratford). The trail is perfect for weekend short breaks with most townships along the route offering clean, comfortable and affordable accommodation; but all offering hot food, visitor services and amenities.
Small towns along the trail include Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr, Dawson, Heyfield, Tinamba, Maffra, Powerscourt.
There's history, vibrant wineries, contemporary restaurants and cafes, exciting specialty shops, and much more to discover on your Gippsland Plains Rail Trail adventure.
The trail officially commences at the intersection of Marshalls Road and Traralgon-Maffra Road (C105) approximately 4 km from the Traralgon train station and CBD.
The trail carpark is located at Burnetts Road, approx 1km along the trail towards Glengarry. At this location there is plenty of safe off road space to load and unload bikes, organise gear and there is also a trail map and information shelter.
Bike Repair stations are available at Glengarry (in front of Platform 3854 Cafe) and Heyfield.
Review:
At the former Glengarry Rail Station there is a grassy area with unshaded tables, remains of the former station and old lifting equipment on display. Make sure you pick up a pie or cake at Bushies Bakery Glengarry which has award winning (and delicious) pies and pasties.
