Trafalgar Grasslands (Altona Meadows)
A small grasslands area, 95m long and 25m wide, which has some lovely wildflowers in season. We visited in January and found a nice variety of flowers.
The information sign at the site reads:
Trafalgar grassland is a critically endangered plant community found within the Western Basalt Plains.
Hobsons Bay City Council is undertaking land management practices to rehabilitate and protect our natural asset.
Today less than 0.01 per cent of native grasslands remain intact making these ecotypes one of the most restricted vegetation communities in Australia. Species currently restricted and endangered within these ecosystems include the Fat-tailed Dunnart, Striped Legless Lizard, and Plains Wanderer. These trends can be reversed through intensive land management techniques including; weed control, ecological burns, and re-vegetation.
We would like to thank you in helping us preserve this endangered grassland by restraining your pets from entering this protected site.
