Toolern Creek Trail (Melton)
Toolern Creek is a small tributary of the Werribee River in Victoria. The creek rises near Toolern Vale and flows through the Melbourne suburbs of Melton and Melton South, separating the industrial and residential areas of these suburbs. The creek forms a confluence with the Werribee River at Exford immediately downstream from the Melton Reservoir.
The Toolern Creek Trail is 4.4km one way and is level with gentle inclines. It is suitable for walking, jogging, cycling and prams.
Toolern Creek Trail starts at Hannah Watts park and heads south under the Western freeway. This picturesque trail follows Toolern Creek a significant stream that feeds into the Werribee River at Exford. The vegetation along the creek is a 'Creekline Grassy Woodlands' of the Victorian Volcanic Plains, while the escarpment is 'Escarpment Woodland'. There are remnant Blackwood 'Acacia melanoxylon' and the large River Red Gums 'Eucalyptus camaldulensis' such as Big Red may be over 400 years old. There are rare native raspberry 'Rubus parvifolius' that can easily be mistaken for blackberry.
Friends of Toolern Creek have done significant revegetation in this area. Platypuses have been photographed in the southern reaches of the creek.
The Toolern Creek Trail can link in with both the Arnolds Creek Circuit and the Hannah Watts Park Trail to extend your tour of the Shire.
