The Triangle Playground, Towong Street, Tallangatta
This is the town that moved to accommodate our requirement for dams. The playground was not as moving as that but still creates a short story of interest for families. There is a long park dotted with trees next to the Main Street. There is a structure with spiral slide, curved slide, fireman's pole, scrambling wall, spiral ladder, ladder with square rungs, curved ladder and flying fox. Also four standard swings, birds nest swing, stand on spinner, rope net climbing frame and four person rocker with two horse seats.
Under a big shade roof is a structure for younger kids with curved slide, tunnel, steering wheel and steps. There is also a tractor springer, four wheel bike springer and two tables.
There is a shelter with BBQs, shelter with two tables, unshaded tables, water tap and toilets.
Some History of Tallangatta - In 1918 the River Murray Commission selected the confluence of the Mitta Mitta and Murray Rivers, upstream of Albury-Wodonga, as the site for a major reservoir, Hume, to provide reliable water for annual irrigation downstream. While it was known from the start that the reservoir would ultimately inundate Tallangatta, the first stage, completed in 1936, left Tallangatta untouched. Discussions on moving the town recommenced in the late 1940's. The chosen location was Bolga, a rail siding eight kilometres to the west and well above the level of the waters of the enlarged reservoir. The moving of an almost entire town commenced in 1954. While most timber buildings were moved, brick houses and other buildings like hotels, halls and churches were demolished. At Bolga a new shopping precinct was constructured fronting two large triangles of parkland which is the current location of the playground. The new Tallangatta was officially opened in June 1956.
