The Top Family Activities and Playgrounds in the Wodonga City Council Region
The Wodonga City Council region is three and a half hours drive north-east of Melbourne and includes the main town of Wodonga and some surrounding small towns. Albury lies just across the Murray River in New South Wales.
A map of the region is:
The best playgrounds in this area are:
Belvoir Park Playground, Huon Street, Wodonga
A super playground which has a fenced and unfenced areas with safety gates controlling access to different areas. A ramp leads around the back of the playground to a large elevated platform which has a high wave slide, climbing wall, straight and metals slides and rope climbing ladder. Underneath are various small tunnels and mirrors. The ramp also leads to an elevated area with dual wave slides.
There is a large sandpit, boat shaped structure and little slide for the younger kids. Under the ramps are a variety of educational type activities boards. The fenced area has four swings including two hammocks.
In the open unfenced area is a large pyramid climbing frame, birds nest swing, donut on an angle which spins around, four swings, structure with hanging disks, flying fox, monkey rungs and stepping stones.
There are a number of shelters with tables and shaded seats scattered about plus water taps. Toilets are about 50m away from the playground area. Next to a large grassy area and about 50m away from a lake with water birds.
The playground is set amid Belvoir Park and Sumsion Gardens, a large open space with established trees and a lake abundant with water birds. The park features a walking track around the lake, picnic and BBQ facilities and shelters plus public toilets.
Les Stone Park Playground, Parkland Drive, Wodonga
A great playground for pirates and buccaneers. The playground has a pirate ship and sea theme. The main structure has the wooden bow of a ship (plundered from the South Pacific I'm told) and a separate section with dual wave slides, nice climbing wall, spiral ladder, abacus, sloping parallel bars, two rope bridges, walkway, monkey bars, hanging disks, steps and shop front (selling mermaid necklaces) and two steering wheels to steer the ship.
Some cute springers (an octopus, fish and seal), see-saw with pelican and clownfish seats, wave rider speedboat on springs and four swings.
There is a shelter with BBQs, five unshaded tables, water tap, unshaded seats, huge grassy area and toilets.
Willow Park Playground, Pearce Street, Wodonga
The playground has a main traversing structure and lots of standalone elements and is set in a lovely huge park. The main structure has a long flying fox, monkey rungs, chain traverse, balance beam traverse, stepping stones and monkey bars. Also a nice fire truck (Wodonga's fires don't stand a chance against this beautifully equipped fire truck), little stand alone slide, hippo springer, skateboard springer, two stand-on spinners, toddlers swing, bike springer, wallaby springer, pelican springer, horse springer, family size see-saw, lotus leaf spinner with hand wheel and plastic basketball ring.
Three shaded tables under trees, unshaded seats, lots more unshaded tables, big shelter with BBQ, water tap, toilets and huge grassy area. Next to a great Skate Park.
Take a short trip across the border to Oddies Creek Adventure Playspace, Wodonga Place, Albury South
This wonderful playground is located in a strand of River Red Gums surrounded by a big grassy area. The playground is designed for children from babies to teenagers with features to stimulate physical, social and imaginative play experiences. The playground is fully fenced but the gates are not safety gates and can be pushed open (which is enough to defeat all but the most intelligent parent who seek vainly for a lock to open but unfortunately not secure enough for most kids who display more ingenuity).
One end of the playground has a structure with a ramp winding around the outside with wave slide, climbing wall, rope ladder and metal slide. There are plenty of musical instruments scattered about the structure plus an intricate rubber and rope climbing frame at the bottom.
The other main structure is lower with a paddle steamer form with wave slide, ladder with square rungs, rope ladder, fireman's pole, ladder up a wall plus a big sandpit with some shade.
The playground also has a long (but quite slow) flying fox with plastic disk seat, huge birds nest swing, family sized see-saw, donut on an angle which spins around, plenty of swings including one with harness, musical bridge and stand-on spinner.
There are some shaded tables but more shaded seats are needed around the playground area. Toilets and shelter with tables outside the fenced area. Water tap with BBQs. Fully landscaped, the area is an ideal spot for a family day out.
Baranduda Skatepark is excellent and has some very smooth square bowls joined together with a spine plus a small street section.
