The Top Family Activities and Playgrounds in the Ararat Rural City Region
The Ararat Rural City region is located in the western part of the state, about two and a quarter hours drive from Melbourne, and includes the main town of Ararat and smaller towns of Lake Bolac, Willaura, Pomonal and Moyston.
The region is located on the eastern side of the world renowned Grampians National Park and there are also other parks to explore - Mount Cole State Forest, Langi Ghiran State Park and Ararat Hills Regional Park.
Experience the history of the area - dark history at the J-Ward Gaol or Aradale Asylum or discover a richer history with the role of Ararat in the Victorian gold rush by a visit to the Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre.
Green Hill Lake and Lake Bolac provide water based recreation activities such as swimming, fishing and boating.

Visitor Information Centre Playground, Lake Bolac
Located next to the visitor Information Centre and full of activities and facilities for a family stop. There is an old blue and red tractor to climb up onto and drive, three shelters with tables and a BBQ, water tap and a play structure under shade sails with wave slide, scrambling wall, fireman's pole, ladder, tunnel, small slide, steering wheel, steps, walkway, flying fox and monkey bars.
Also under shade is a skateboard springer, frog springer, stand-on spinner and a four person rocker. Unshaded are a skateboard springer, swings, speedboat on springs and a standalone traverse of hanging disks. Unshaded seats and a smallish grassy area next to the playground.
A highlight is a concrete path which goes around the tourist information centre with impressions in the path of birds and animals, a lovely set of hanging pipes which you can hit to make music and a lot of information boards covering these topics: flora of the Western plains, local reptiles, bird life, the tornado which passed through the district in 2006, short finned eel, eel festival, flax mill, natural disasters, the Depression, soldier settlement, sport, entertainment, hawkers, early transport, salt lakes, Narrapumelap homestead, first sheep run, bluestone buildings, early settlers, George Augustus Robinson, Salt Creek, legend of the bunyip, first people of the lake, aboriginal mounds and geology of the district.
Willaura Lions Park Playground, Willaura
A small town .. a big playground. Very extensive playground set on a sandy/gravelly base. The main structure has a farmyard theme which includes a water tank, shear the sheep panel, General Store, dual wave slides, steps, high balance bridge, chain bridge covered in rubber, vertical rubber covered chain net, hanging disk traverse, a chain bridge traverse and a tunnel traverse.
Also a fun family sized see-saw, donut spinner, little baby swing, standard swings, sit-on spinner, ladybird springer, cute wallaby springer, sand digger, see-saw with lovely horse seats, a cubby with shop front and a sand play area.
Under a huge shady tree are three shaded tables, two unshaded tables, artillery gun on display, shelter with seats, tables and BBQ, lovely metal dog sculpture (from manningsculptures.com.au), nice garden, grassy areas, oval, water tap, four tennis courts and an exercise station with leg press, sit-up bench and elliptical trainer. Toilets are 50m away.
The only skate park in this region is
Ararat Skatepark (A metal halfpipe and some metal and concrete elements including quarters, banks, rollover, spine and grind pole)
