Games and puzzles are our passion.
The Games Shop opened its first store in historic Royal Arcade in 1978. In those days, a specialist games shop was somewhat of a novelty in Australia (indeed anywhere in the world). Chess and backgammon were the mainstays of the business back then.
Now in its third decade, the store has become somewhat of a tourist attraction. It is visited by people from all over the world seeking a unique chess set, game or puzzle.
We are passionate advocates of traditional games and puzzles.
Our products may have changed over the years, but the focus of the business hasn't. We cherish the pleasure derived from playing a game around a table, much the same way our grandparents did. In our view, nothing rivals the excitement and satisfaction of a family or group of friends enjoying a game or puzzle together.
Whilst we acknowledge computer games can be highly entertaining, our focus is the promotion of traditional games and puzzles. But we are fussy! Before stocking a game or puzzle, we test them against strict criteria. That is, they have to be educational, challenging or great fun to play.
We are located in the historic Royal Arcade, Melbourne. You can find our store through the Bourke St Mall entrance to Royal Arcade located opposite the GPO towards the Elizabeth St end.
