Tallangatta - Bridges and Cuttings Walk
Starting at Tallangatta Showgrounds, this High Country Rail Trail return walk is a pleasant stroll through low cuttings and over small bridges beside the banks of Lake Hume.
This is an easy and enjoyable walk for all the family.
Tallangatta is the first township you encounter if heading east deeper into the alpine regions or last if heading west down from the mountains. Situated on Lake Hume, Tallangatta is often the base for visitors enjoying the experience of travelling local sections of the Rail Trail.
The High Country Rail Trail isn't just for riding. Its firm surface and easy gradients combine for very good walking conditions as well. The local volunteers who maintain the trail do an amazing job. The air is fresh, the light clear and the scenery is beautiful.
Tallangatta Showgrounds is a large public space that hosts several major events each year. Community operated camping sites are available throughout the year at very reasonable rates. There are also public cooking, shower and toilet facilities.
The High Country Rail Trail curves around the bottom of the gentle slope of the Showgrounds on the outskirts of town. A public gate opens directly onto the High Country Rail Trail.
Walking away from the township immediately finds you enjoying rural surroundings. You quickly come to the Lake Hume shoreline. Water views accompany you the rest of the way there and back.

Points of Interest
1. Tallangatta Showgrounds
At the end of Weramu Street you enter the Showgrounds. Inexpensive community run camping is available. At the bottom of the sloping showgrounds is a gate to the High Country Rail Trail. Turn right onto the Rail Trail.
2. The trail is firm underfoot
The trail surfaces are a combination of a sealed bitumen mix or compacted gravel. Gradients are low.
3. Be surprised
Tallangatta has its own observatory.
4. Lake Hume shoreline
The shoreline begins immediately below the Showgrounds perimeter. The views are lovely.
5. The first bridge
Looking back toward the Showgrounds after crossing the first bridge.
6. Embedded artefacts
Sleeper nails are a not uncommon discovery along the High Country Rail Trail.
7. Friendly natives
This Blue-tongued lizard didn't appear to mind posing for a photograph.
8. Take some tree time
The River red gums lining the shore can be quite spectacular look at, particularly in early morning or evening light.
9. Birdlife
There is plenty of birdlife to enjoy. In this case a Pied cormorant watches the water for a passing feed.
10. Seating
Seats are provided along the High Country Rail Trail for rest, reflection and appreciation of the special place you are sharing.
11. Last stop
Just past the Washaway Creek High Country Rail Trail bridge is a rustic view of an earlier bridge at this site. Approaching sunset is a nice time to be taking this walk for the pleasure of evening's golden light.
12. Sunsets
Sunsets from the shoreline below the Showgrounds can be gorgeous. Watch for an opportunity to experience a colourful end to your day.
