Northbrook
This Victorian Italianate villa was built in 1888-89 to the design of architect Charles D'Ebro, who was also responsible for Stonington, Prahran Town Hall and Prahran Market. Northbrook was built for auctioneer Donald Munro, on 2.5 acres (1 hectare) of land facing High Street. Munro, the son of James Munro, Premier of Victoria, was a partner with W L Baillieu in a successful auctioneering business, until he was financially ruined by the economic crash of the 1890s, and never lived in his new home. However, he was elected to Malvern Council in 1890 and became Shire President in 1895.

Merchant, Robert Sellar occupied the house from 1889 and in 1893 ownership of the property was transferred to the Federal Bank of Australia (in liquidition). In 1897 new owner, maltster, Michael Daley, added the ballroom. In 1929 Northbrook Estate was subdivded. The house was then described as a residence of 10 very large rooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, scullery, pantry, large cellar and ballroom. A noble allotment... beautifully laid out in lawns, shrubs and flowers. With very substantial stabling and a loft.... The property is admirably situated for a first class Guest House or entertainment establishment.

In 1931 the house was sold to a syndicate of tea merchants and the building was converted to apartments. When Malvern Council purchased the property in 1945 the verandah was removed and in 1958 Malvern Library was erected in front of the building. Northbrook is listed on the Register of the National Estate and is classified by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria).
