Silverleaves Beach (Phillip Island)
Silverleaves is a beautiful golden beach located in Westernport Bay, with low winds and gentle waves.
Silverleaves Beach is a northern facing beach, making it ideal for beach walks, fishing, swimming and more. It's a popular place for fishermen and families enjoying activities such as sailing, beach games, paddle boarding, jet skiing and boating. Visitors can also enjoy the 20 minute walk to the main township of Cowes, where they will find cafes, restaurants and shops.
There are gravel car parks and food is available at the Silverleaves store, offering food, hot and cold drinks.
Note: Silverleaves Beach is part of Observation Beach which is a 5 km long beach that runs due east from Erehwon Point at Cowes, out along a low, sandy, vegetated spit that terminates at the narrow, sandy Observation Point. A foreshore reserve and caravan park back the western end, while the eastern half is occupied by Observation Hill Reserve.
The beach varies in width and character depending on the amount of sand moving alongshore. Numerous low, wooden groynes have been built near Cowes to try and prevent the inevitable sand movement. Waves are usually low, though strong westerlies will send small wind waves running along the beach. At high tide the water is relatively deep against the beach, while tidal flats are exposed at low tide. Strong tidal currents run along the outside of the tidal flats.
This is Phillip Island's longest beach. The Cowes end is very popular in summer, while the eastern point is a more quiescent nature reserve.
Swimming
Best at mid to high tide when the wide tidal flats are covered. Do not swim far offshore, as tidal currents run along the beach.
Surfing
None.
Fishing
Best at high tide or off the beach in a boat.
