Hoddles Creek - Ship Rock Falls

Hoddles Creek - Ship Rock Falls

Located a short distance from Melbourne, the falls are located in the Kurth Kiln Park which is mostly known for its kiln used during the Second World War to make charcoal for gas producer units fitted to motor cars. The park contains a range of forest types and is popular for picnicking, camping, walking and horse riding.

Shiprock Falls is an easy 300m return walk from the Ship Rock picnic area but is not really suitable for a pram or wheelchair because the last section becomes steep, narrow and rutted from water-flow. At the falls, water from the McCrae Creek tumbles over the weathered slabs of granite. There is a viewing platform at the falls where you can get a partial view of the falls. Many people take the difficult track down to the creek to get a closer look.

On the way to the falls you will pass the giant Ship Rock and large boulder outcrop which is very impressive. It's around 10m tall and has a bit of a cave running through it.

At the picnic area is a car park, picnic tables, fire pit and toilets.

Make the most of the visit to the area by exploring Kurth Kiln Regional Park which has nice walks and historical artefacts.
