Review:
This is a real family favourite. It is easy to get to and there is something for all ages. It is the type of place where you could spend all day or just a few hours and repeat visits are just as enjoyable. It is excellent family value with adult entry price being very reasonable and kids getting in for free. There is an extra cost for adults and children if you want to go to the Planetarium or the Lightning Show Room.
There is an outside amphitheatre with a roof which has live shows. They even provide foam pads to sit on and the coffee and cakes stall is next door. That's service! The show ended with a boom when a hydrogen filled balloon blew up. In the yard area out the back there is a playground with a large boat with tables and seats under lovely shady trees next to the playground. There is also a giant sundial (in case you forgot your watch), two large curved dishes which enable you to hear someone whispering about 100m away (almost as good as the hearing of my wife when I try and sneak away without finishing my jobs) and another play area with wooden train, climbing frames, tables, seats and free BBQs.
You can explore the Spotswood Pumping Station which was the hub of Melbourne's sewerage system from 1897 to 1965 (thankfully it only smells of oil and not sewerage) or take a Pumping Station tour. The Station has a Mad Muck exhibition with plenty of hands-on activities about caring for the water systems around the Bay. Inside the main building, there is a huge area (two levels) of exhibits with lots of hands-on opportunities. There are even some seats for exhausted parents to collapse on. Exhibitions included Toys (temporary exhibition), Science in the House and Sport where Dad strained a hammie trying to beat Cathy Freeman over the 10m dash. Upstairs is the Nitty Gritty Super City exhibition especially for 3-8 year olds.
