Rocklands Reservoir
Rocklands Reservoir, located on the Glenelg River, is GWMWater's largest reservoir. It was originally constructed to supply the now decommissioned Wimmera-Mallee Domestic and Stock channel system. In more recent years it has an important role to play in the region as a recreational destination.
North of Hamilton, and just 15 minutes from Balmoral, Rocklands Reservoir, covering over 6700 hectares of land, is the second largest lake in Victoria.
There are six main pet-friendly, free campgrounds along the Reservoir's edge, plus the Rocklands Retreat and the Rocklands Tourist Caravan Park, offering pet-friendly powered and unpowered sites.
While the main wall area of the Reservoir and Glendinning Campground is easily accessible for 2WD, other campsites may require 4WD vehicles.
There are toilets and picnic tables near the reservoir.
Activities include:
Camping
Camping is available in the neighbouring State Forest (adjacent to foreshore). Camp grounds are managed by the Department of Environment, Lands, Water and Planning. Note that camp fires are permitted in properly constructed fireplaces in line with Country Fire Authority's warnings and restrictions.
The six location buoys on the water of the Reservoir signify the six main campgrounds:
Mountain Dam - boat ramp, toilets, suitable for camping, pets welcome
Ferguson's Camp - boat ramp, toilets, suitable for camping, pets welcome
Glendinning Camp - boat ramp, toilets, suitable for camping and caravanning, pets welcome
Brody's Camp - suitable for camping, pets welcome
Henry's Camp - suitable for camping, pets welcome
Brookes Camping Reserve - suitable for camping, pets welcome
Camping at the above sites is free and since the sites operate on a first-come-first-served basis, no bookings are required, but it is advised that you arrive early during peak times because these are popular spots.
Glendinning is the largest of the free camps and is suitable for both camping and caravanning.
Boating
Boat ramps are available. Note: Boating is prohibited within 200 metres of the dam wall.
Fishing
Redfin is the predominant species here, but fisherfolk will also find Murray cod, brown trout and golden perch. A boat is needed to reach the more remote areas of the dam; however, those without one can take advantage of the abundance of bank-fishing spots near the dam wall.
Other Activities
Swimming, water-skiing, walking, canoeing and jet-skis are permitted.
