Richmond Community Garden

Richmond Community Garden Group is a not-for-profit incorporated to encourage community gardening in Richmond. As our apartment and unit dwelling population grows, it's important to grow opportunities for community gardening and for sustainable urban growing and harvesting.

Our aim is to create more opportunities for gardening throughout Richmond, both for growing food and for bringing people together to share and learn from each other.

We sub-lease an area in the Burnley Backyard community facility at 49 Tudor Street. Our area has 25 individual plots for rent as well as shared communal beds. We also assist with maintenance of the rest of the gardens at Burnley Backyard.

With Yarra Council's help, we established three planter boxes on the verging nature strip in Tudor Street so passers-by can pick a variety of herbs and teas. We've also planted the nature strip out with Australian natives - for the enjoyment of our neighbours and to attract bees and other beneficial insects!

There is pent-up demand for communal rental plots in Richmond so we have a wait list of members wanting to rent a plot. To go on the wait list for a plot you need to be a paid-up RCGG member. Some plot holders share their plots with other members. Members without a plot can still join in tending and sharing in produce from the communal beds. We hold regular working bees to look after the communal beds and the rest of the gardens at Burnley Backyard.

From time to time we hold events around the topics of sustainable urban gardening and food harvesting practices. These are typically open to the public.
