Ray Bastin Reserve Playground, Norfolk Drive, Narre Warren
Brilliant playground with a rocket theme and you don't need to be a budding rocket scientist to enjoy it. Beautifully landscaped and themed. The central area includes a large rocket on a launching pad with very twisty tunnel slide as an emergency escape route. This structure also has tunnels, stepped levels, walkways, various shaped ladders, panels, shop front, abacus, tic-tac-toe and cubby area. On the side is a rocket launching site with huge control panel - Why go to Kazakhstan when you can launch rockets from the Ray Bastin Reserve? There is a large moon buggy, extra-terrestrial creature writhing in and out of the ground, rope climbing frame, three stand-on spinners, colourful stepping stones sprouting like mushrooms, lots of other rockers, climbing and play equipment, large sandpit, four swings plus a Liberty swing.
The playground is next to a skatepark and BMX track. There is also a sensory trail which highlights different eco-systems, BBQs, plenty of shaded tables and seats under trees, shelters and shade sails. Toilets.
Tip from Romie: Best to avoid during hot days because the black ground reflects all the heat.
Update: A number of years has passed since we last visited and the playground is looking very shabby now. The worm writhing out of the ground has gone and many of the knobs are missing from the control panel. The playground definitely needs a refurbishment.
