Peanut Farm Reserve Dog Off Leash Area (St Kilda)

Peanut Farm Reserve Dog Off Leash Area (St Kilda)

The off leash area is between Spencer Street and Chaucer Street and north of Blessington Street. There is an area of park located south of Blessington Street with a playground but this is an on-leash area. Veg Out Community Gardens to the north is fenced off and there are signs of people sleeping rough along this wall. There is paid parking in the area ($5.50 per hour).

The reserve is mainly occupied by a fenced oval with some gaps and on the south side is a pavilion (lovely mural on the side), basketball courts, cricket nets, tennis rebound wall, table, BBQ, bin and water tap with bowl. There are bins throughout the reserve.

This reserve is a registered Yalukut Willam site - containing evidence of tool making with an information board with the following text:

Following the arrival of the Europeans, the Yalukut Willam quickly mastered the white man's firearms in order to hunt for the diminishing kangaroo and emu populations.

In 1840 Governor La Trobe banned them from carrying firearms. This act had a devastating impact on the future of the Yalukut Willam.

The Boon Wurrung and the Woi Wurrung objected loudly. They found their own future was now seriously threatened despite having afforded the colonialists safe passage and temporary access to their lands via a Tanderrum ceremony.

Angered by La Trobe's edict - the elders argued
"White man take away black fellows country, now gun. Yangelly, Yangelly (be off with you) bloody white man".
(Diary, William Thomas Assistant Protector, 1841)
