Pakenham Grassland Reserve (Pakenham)
The Pakenham Native Grassland Reserve is an historic Pakenham airfield and is a treeless grassland which is federally listed as endangered.
The 10 hectare reserve represents one of the largest grassland remnants in south-east Melbourne. There are 56 different wildflower, grass and native herb species found in the reserve with maroon and purple tinges of the new growth in the Kangaroo grass can be seen in spring.
A footpath goes around the outside of the reserve.
Note: To mimic Indigenous burning and reduce fuel loads, Council slashes and bales the native vegetation. The reduction ensures that some native plants do not dominate the reserve and allows smaller herbs and orchids to flourish. The road network around the perimeter of the grasslands provides a natural fire break.
Snake awareness - Snakes may be seen from time to time in the reserve. These animals are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. They are often seen basking in the sun but being shy of people will typically move once disturbed. If you see a snake it is best to leave it alone. Do not provoke or touch it.
