Fishing - try your hand at catching a meal in one of the crystal clear rivers, home to both Rainbow and Brown Trout. Fly Fish or relax on a river bank of one of the many High Country streams including the Cobungra, Gibbo and Mitta Mitta Rivers. Vic High Country Competition - end of December.
Take a horse riding adventure through the hills and onto the Bogong High Plains with Packers High Country Horseriding at Anglers Rest or bring your own steed and explore the region well known for wild horses.
White water raft or kayak down the challenging and scenic Mitta Mitta, Bundara and Cobungra Rivers, or take a refreshing swim, to clean your mind, body and soul.
Explore the great outdoors by mountain bike, motorbike or four wheel drive. Discover great camping spots, scenic drives and interesting destinations such as the Nunniong High Plains near Ensay, the historic Hinnomunjie Bridge crossing the Mitta Mitta River, or Taylors Crossing impressive suspension bridge past Benambra (part of the Australian Alps Walking Track). A great spot for a barbecue, camping, fishing, canoeing and swimming.
Visit the historic town of Omeo and stroll along Day Avenue. Interpretive signage provides an insight into the historic buildings in the town, including the 1893 historic Courthouse which holds sittings each year.
Visit the Omeo Historic Museum, the police house and stables built in 1883, the 1858 Log Goal where the last prisoner sat in 1981 and the Old Pender's Court hut, believed to be the oldest intact but in Gippsland, built in the early 1840s.
Retrace the miner's footsteps and enjoy one of the many walks at the Oriental Claims, near Omeo. View the historic gold diggings and dramatic cliff faces. Look for wildflowers and local wildlife in this tranquil setting. A great spot for a picnic or barbeque.
Take a scenic drive along the Great Alpine Road, Australia's highest year round accessible road to visit one of the many Lookouts throughout the area including Kosciuszko, Mount Blowhard and Connors Hill. Drive towards Benambra and enjoy the stunning scenery from McMillan's Lookout, a great view of the famous Lake Omeo, which held its last boat race in 1976, remains mostly dry today.
Visit the Wineries in the Region. Indulge in a 'Devils Backbone' Sparkling Shiraz or a crisp Chardonnay at the Ensay Winery or head to Mt. Markey Micro Brewery and Winery at Cassilis for locally grown cider, beer and fruit wines.
Explore the galleries, museum & bookshop in Omeo, Swifts Creek and Ensay. Many talented artists hide in the hills, inspired by the beautiful surrounding landscape. Bring to life the history of the region by reading one of the many books that have been written about the area, its history, people and sites.
There are some great mountain bike trails in the high country and you can cycle from Swifts Creek to Ensay along the picturesque Swifts Creek East Road and Ensay Doctors Flat Road, following the Tambo river, taking in beautiful rural settings and passing good fishing and swimming spots.
Improve your handicap and soak in the serenity at the beautiful Tambo Valley or Omeo Golf Courses.Tournaments are held several times each year.
Relive the old mining days at historic sites such as the Oriental Claims, Cassilis, Glen Wills and Victoria Falls. 'Tractor Pull' and historic machinery rally in October at Hinnomunjie Recreation Reserve.
Visit rustic Huts with many stories to tell, including Moscow Villa set high in the Nunniong High Plains near Ensay, Kennedy's Hut at Taylors Crossing and many more in the district.
Relax at Historic pubs of the region that tell may stories and mingle with the locals over a game of pool, a quiet beer and a meal. Enjoy good food at the many cafes, restaurants and bakeries.
Camp along the Mitta Mitta River at Jokers Flat and Big River camping sites at Anglers Rest or camping grounds at Omeo & Swifts Creek. The Limestone or Native Dog Flat are also popular camping areas, where many people base themselves to explore the Alpine National Park.
