Nowa Nowa Sculpture Trail and Walks
Nestled on the edge of Lake Tyers where the fresh water from the ancient Gorge meets the Lake, this small East Gippsland township celebrates a rich history, beautiful environment and friendly community. Enjoy the trails that make up the Nowa Nowa Walk. Savour the idyllic waterway, the wildlife and bush and enjoy the contemporary arts culture that now flourishes.
Between the Bridges Walk
- Begin at the Petanque site beside the Health Centre
- See where the first dwelling in Nowa Nowa once stood
- Enjoy a game of petanque on the piste (court)
- Take a closer look at the sculptural work of local artists
- See the War Memorial and the Memorial Rose Garden
- Walk across to Boggy Creek and decide on your route - up to the Gorge Lookout or down along the Creek, under the Princes Highway Bridge and onto the Sculpture Walk.
Boggy Creek Walk
Distance: 1.4km Time: 20 mins Rating: Easy, gradual uphill
An uphill stroll along the high banks of the Boggy Creek takes you to the Gorge Lookout.
- From the Petanque site, continue up (north west) past the disused railway bridge
- Boggy Creek becomes the Nowa Nowa Gorge
- Rest at the Gorge Lookout commemorative stone seat
- See the ancient rock formations of the Gorge
- Views of rainforest, lilly pillies, blackwood, yellow woods, pittosporum.
Sculpture Walk
Distance: 1.4km Time: 20 mins Rating: Easy
A tranquil walk along the shores of the Nowa Nowa Arm, where the fresh water of Boggy Creek meets the salt waters of Lake Tyers.
- Begin at the Petanque site. Head downhill (south east)
via the path under the Princes Hwy bridge
- Take the Island Loop to stay close to the creek
- Or shortcut past the Pony Club and recreational facilities
- Rest on the carved seats depicting historical Nowa Nowa
- Jetty, boat ramp, shade and barbecue make this a good swimming & popular fishing spot
- Visit the unusual Ramsdell Wood Gallery, and the unforgettable 'Ra' at Mingling Waters
- See the growing collection of public sculptures from the annual Nowa Nowa Nudes Art Show.
Wetlands Walk
Distance: 1.3km Time: 25 mins Rating: Easy
The Wetland Walk follows the shores of the lake, meandering through the paperbarks and reeds.
- Rich in resources for the Krauatungaloong - Blown Grass with seeds for making flour; Manna Gums for sugar, Sea Celery for greens, reeds for making knives; Ribbon Weed
and Paper-bark for wrapping foods and other things
- A popular fishing spot where the poddy mullet can be seen jumping high above the water.
- Watch for a soaring White-Bellied Sea Eagle and refresh and rest at the picnic table.
Banksia Boulevard Walk
Distance: 4km Time: 50mins Rating: Medium, some steep upward on good track, 2km steady upward climb.
With its conservation values evident, a walk in Lake Tyers State Park through timbered hillside and thick Banksia stands, to continue into Colquhoun State Forest.
- View the Lake from good vantage before steep short climb away from the waterside
- Look for Goanna tree scratchings or oozing Black Wattle sap that feeds the night-time Sugar Gliders
- Nearing the hilltop ,veer left into the Geebung (Persoonia linearis) and silvertops(Eucalyptus sieberi) to come out at the marked Princes Highway crossing
- Cross Highway with care, into the Colqhoun State Forest
- Wander through a working forest with its many recreational and commercial activities requiring sustainable management
- Beekeepers harvest nectar from the flowering eucalypts for honey. Watch for Yellow Tailed Cockatoos, Black Tailed Wallabies and Common Wombat
Rail Trail Ramble
Distance: 4.3km Time: 40mins Rating: Easy
At the East Gippsland Rail Trail choose whether to walk west a further 500km to the historic and spectacular Trestle Bridge or east for an easy 4.3 km to Nowa Nowa along a route lined with swaying silvertops.
- After autumn rain look for fungi; in spring delight in the variety of delicated wild orchids
- Head for Nowa Nowa and back to the Petanque site via township toilet and shops
