Narracan Falls

Narracan Falls

Narracan Falls, which is about 8m tall, is located in the Narracan Falls Reserve near Trafalgar. The waterfalls are sourced by the Narracan Creek which rises in the hills northwest of Thorpdale and eventually joins the Latrobe River near Lake Narracan.

There is car parking as well as two picnic tables and wood fireplaces in the grassy paddock. There are no bins or toilets. Livestock has access to the reserve and you may have to step around an occasional cow pat. There is also a tribute to the pioneers of the district, particularly John and Emma Savige and Thomas and Emma Savige who settled in this locality in 1876.

There are clear views of the falls from the paddock. A walking path about 50m from the car park leads to the base of the falls. At the base there is a huge curtain of tree roots on the left side and you can feel the power of the water.

There is also a separate track to the top of the falls and depending on the flow of water it is possible to rock hop across the top of the falls (using care). The water flows year round but during winter and spring the flow is probably too much to venture across the top of the falls.

It is possible to have a dip in the small pool below the falls although a sign with a list of hazards includes cliff face, slippery rocks, submerged obstacles, snakes and swimming not advised. Visibility is poor and there are submerged rocks, so if you do decide to go in the water, take care.
