Myrniong - Pykes Creek Reservoir

Pykes Creek Reservoir is located west of Melbourne near Ballan. It is a popular destination for activities including picnics, swimming, boating, jet skiing, fishing, birdwatching and walking.
Anglers will enjoy the challenge of hooking brown trout which tend to grow up to about 1.5 kilograms in the reservoir. Small redfin are also in abundance.
Nature-lovers and birdwatchers will enjoy walking along the reservoir to see the range and beauty of wildlife on offer. Keep an eye out for birds including the wedge-tailed eagle, great egret and red-necked stint, as well as frogs, kangaroos, wombats, sugar gliders, snakes and lizards. Plant life is also in abundance with a large range of native trees and grasses surrounding the reservoir.
There is a designated swimming area, Swimmer's Cove, which has water with low visibility and some submerged logs so some care needs to be taken.

Facilities include BBQ areas, toilets, picnic tables and a playground. Those participating in water activities will enjoy the convenience of a boat ramp for launching their boat, kayak or jet ski however are encouraged to check water levels prior to visiting the Pykes Creek.
There is a maximum number of power driven vessels permitted on the water. This number varies depending on the water level - when we visited it was 70. It is the vessel operators responsibility to determine the number of vessels on the water. Count the number of trailers in trailer park to determine number of vessels on the water.
There is a speed restriction of 5 knots within 50 metres of shore with the exception of the access lane. All vessels must travel in an anti-clockwise direction.
Located on a tributary of the Werribee River, Pykes Creek Reservoir provides water for use within the Bacchus Marsh and Werribee Irrigation Districts.

Review:
A reservoir which offers a nice range of activities including boating, swimming, fishing and picnics.
The reservoir does not have locakable gates and is accessible all the time. Early morning and evening you are likely to see kangaroos beside the road and water.
Just inside the entrance gates is a parking area, toilets and two boat ramps.
Further along Pykes Creek Road there is an area with picnic tables and more toilets. This area is beside the designated swimming cove which is roped off with buoys to protect swimmers from boats.
At the far end of Pykes Creek Road there is a playground with tables.
