Murtoa Silo Art

Murtoa Silo Art

Artist SMUG (Sam Bates) has transformed a Murtoa silo into an incredible piece of art. This kaleidoscope of 30 native birds is inspired by the James Hill Taxidermy collection held in the Murtoa Water Tower Museum, combined with the discoveries of Dr John Cade, a Murtoa-born psychiatrist who made significant contributions to the understanding and treatments of bipolar disorder. The unique, glowing bird in the mural represents the 1 in 30 Australians who experience mental health illness.

Natimuk artist Dave Jones will be completing a permanent light animation that will illuminate the silo at night.

The mural was completed in April. 2023. Over winter, the best viewing time for full sun on the whole of artwork is after 4pm and also at dusk. Over the summer when the days are longer and there is more direct sun, the best viewing times are more extended. The artwork is best viewed from Soldier Avenue, across from the Water Tower Museum.
