Mount Martha South Beach (Mount Martha)
Mount Martha South beach is a popular beach for bathers, sailors and boaters, with facilities for all.
Mount Martha Beach is 2 km long, with Balcombe Creek mouth dividing it into two equal halves: Mount Martha South and Mount Martha North. The Mount Martha Life Saving Club and the Mount Martha Yacht Club are located at the northern end of the southern beach. South of the club a vegetated bluff backs the beach, with small boat sheds between the bluff and the 50 m wide beach. The beach slopes steeply to the shoreline, with usually deep water against the beach face.
Swimming - The steep beach and drop-off close inshore are a problem for young children and poor swimmers. Use caution if bathing here, as waves will also generate rip currents along the beach and across the outer bar.
Mount Martha South Beach has a General Beach Hazard Rating of 3/10 (Least hazardous). The beach is patrolled by the Mount Martha Life Saving Club.
Review:
The northern point of the beach is Balcombe Creek which was about 5m wide and flowing quite fast when we were last at this beach.
Mount Martha South Beach is fine for adults and good swimmers but is not suitable for poor swimmers due to the steep drop-off but is protected by the Mount Martha Life Saving Club. Overall the beach is long, wide and sandy. The sand at the main part of the beach near the Life Saving Club has a layer of black sand near the shoreline but was yellow near the back of the beach.
There is a kiosk at the Life Saving Club. The Mount Martha Yacht Club is positioned next to the Mount Martha Life Saving Club. However boats are not allowed in the water north of the Yacht Club. There is parking available next to the Mount Martha Life Saving Club.
South of the Yacht Club is a row of 133 beach huts at the back of the beach which extends to the extreme southern end of the beach.
Opposite Kilburn Avenue (#463 Esplanade) is a road down to a car park behind a row of beach huts where there are toilets. At the north end of the car park are three tables, water tap and BBQ. Near here Hearn Creek flows into the bay.
There is Beach Box Fish & Chips in a shopping centre opposite the beach (4 Lochiel Avenue, Mt Martha). However, it doesn't get good reviews from visitors and has limited opening hours.
