Moreland Street and Public Art
The Moreland Council commissions public art to make community spaces more exciting and attractive. The annual MoreART Public Art show, typically held in November and December, showcases sculptural, ephemeral, temporary and installation artworks along the Upfield train line and bike path.
Many Hands Make Glenroy
by Carla GottgensA photographic documentary created by Carla Gottgens has uncovered the hidden treasures of the residents of Glenroy. The evocative 72 - panel work highlights the diverse backgrounds of the residents in Glenroy. The photographic documentary involved 18 local households. The artist invited every member of the household to choose a cherished item and describe its meaning and personal significance. Each panel features their words, their name and the number of years they have lived in Glenroy.

Thinking of the Earth
by Al StarkThis work is related to a contemplation of the earth and its systems. Its symbolism represents subconscious thoughts on what we know we are doing to the earth, as opposed to what we are doing about it.
It aims to represent a seeing and knowing within a collective consciousness that offers cautious hope, like embers in a struggling fire. It offers the idea that we are one and the same within nature, and the universe. It concerns not one particular group, but all of us, and our future in relation to our environment.
The black background enables objects and figures to seemingly float in space and also flatten out an imposing architecture. The benign figures symbolise the human spirit, forming a narrative with the landscape that references the local Merri Creek environment.

New Order
by Louise LavarackNew Order consists of five freestanding columns fixed to low concrete plinths spaced along Sparta Place. The form of each Greek-style column is delineated by a cage of galvanised steel uprights and mesh.
The cages are filled with recycled 'kitchenalia' toasters, kettles, saucepans, mixing bowls, teapots, etc made from various materials including stainless steel, chrome and aluminium.
New Order is based on the sister city relationship between Brunswick and Sparta. The artwork makes a direct reference to the ruined remains of ancient Greek architecture. However in Sparta Place, the universally recognised form of the classic Ionic column is constructed from contemporary domestic materials.
An intriguing interplay between past and present is thus set up. From a distance the line of columns suggests the grand architectural scale of the past, while at close quarters the more modest scale of contemporary domestic detail becomes apparent.

Leonidas
Leonidas is the King of ancient Sparta who died at the battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. The Memorial was erected in 2009 by Moreland City Council and the Pallaconian Brotherhood in memory of all those who have sacrificed their lives for freedom and democracy. It symbolizes the enduring friendship between the people of Greece and Australia and recognizes the Sister City Relationship between Moreland and Sparta.

Brunswick Kind
Cocoa Jackson - Caribbean-Australian Fred James lived at 71 Edward Street Brunswick. Using the ring name "Cocoa Jackson", Fred was featherweight boxing champion of Australia in 1928/9 at age 21. Fred trained young boxers in East Brunswick and worked in the Melbourne railyards. He was a well known and respected local and could often be bound in The Sporting Club, just yards from his home.
Alan Davis - Alan grew up in Brunswick and started working at Hoffmans Pottery Brunswick at the age of 15. He worked there for twenty years with a 6 year break when he served overseas during World War 2. Alan then worked for the Tramways for 27 years. He was an active citizen and served on Council from 1962-86, was the Mayor of Coburg in 1977-78 and again in 1982-83.
Turbo Brown - Trevor 'Turbo' Brown knows a thing or two about hardship. Born in 1967 he was taken from his family and grew up in a boy's home. A true pupil of the school of hard knocks, Turbo did a stretch in Pentridge Prison before his mob convinced him to study art at RMIT. Currently living and working in Brunswick, his distinctive style is recognised locally and internationally, and his work fills most prestigious gallery collections. As he has said: "When I paint I feel like I'm in the dreamtime, and I can see all the animals and birds that live there".
Ruth Hope Crow (1916- 1999) - Ruth was indefatigable in her activism for social reform and environmental planning. A real lefty, she could always be found where change was agitating. From women's rights to rail link proposals, she worked for the people. She was a Member of the Order of Australia, a former Communist Party member and recipient of the Robyn Boyd Environmental Award of Merit with her husband Maurie in 1972. The legacy of work she began with Maurie in their Sydney Rd home remains in The Crow Collection - held at Victoria University in the form of journals, books, reports, pamphlets and working papers.
Florence 'Dot' Cheers - Florence 'Dot' Cheers was born in 1906 and lived at 57 Munro Street, Brunswick. A broadcaster, actress and philanthropist, Dot was one of the first women presenters on radio. Her ABC children's show "Aunty June" ruled the airways in the 1940s. She married country singer "Smoky Dawson" in 1944 and the pair formed a strong lifetime partnership. One of the founders of "Carols by Candlelight", Dot was an intelligent, forceful and pioneering woman. Finally laid to rest in 2010 in Sydney at the age of 104, Florence is a true Brunswick Kind.

Brunswick Drinking Fountain
The polished granite drinking fountain was presented to the City of Brunswick by the Brunswick branch of Australian Natives' Association (A.N.A) to commemorate its 25th anniversary on 25th October, 1910.

Noel Counihan
