Mordialloc Beach and Foreshore
Mordialloc Beach is a well developed and popular beach, with the added safety of the lifesaving club and the attraction of the pier.
Mordialloc Beach is the southern section of a 4 km long beach running from Mordialloc Creek to the bluffs at Mentone. The beach is patrolled by Mordialloc Life Saving Club and is fronted by fenced dunes and a wide beach.
The Mordialloc section is backed by an extensive foreshore reserve, that has a number of facilities including the pier, a large car park, park and picnic areas. It also has a lovely, curving promenade running behind the beach from the pier to the lifesaving club and beyond.
The good rail and road access, car parking and other facilities, make this a very popular beach.
The Mordialloc section is 1 km long, faces the south-west and extends to the north of the 300 m long Mordialloc pier and adjacent drain entrance wall.
Swimming - Safest on the attached, shallow sections of the inner bar and clear of the rip holes and troughs, particularly in the patrolled area. Warning: Do not jump off the pier, as there is shallow water underneath and serious injuries can result.
Mordialloc Beach has a General Beach Hazard Rating of 3/10 (Least hazardous).
Review:
A highlight of the beach is the playground in the Peter Scullin Reserve which has ticketed parking from 8am to 8pm. This area has a grassy area with unshaded tables and seats, BBQs and water tap.
To the west of the playground and carpark is Windows on the Bay restaurant and to the south is the Tour de Cafe which caters for bike riders (as you would surmise) from the name, a rotunda with seats, more BBQs, grassy area and big seat / tables.
Near the playground is a big picnic shelter with lots of tables and seats located next to a BBQ and toilets.
To the south of Mordialloc Creek is the Mordialloc Sailing Club, Doyles restaurant and Blueys Boat Hire. There is a pier at the southern end and you can observe yachts sailing out from the Sailing Club.
At the back of the wide sandy beach is a concrete walkway which leads to a pier 100m south. 100m to the north is the Mordialloc Life Saving Club. Renovations to the club building will be complete in early 2017 and will include an Aboriginal Gathering Place. The promenade stretches to the north for a further 100m where the sandy beach continues for a long way until eventually there is a headland reaching into the water.
100m north of the Life Saving Club there are two drain pipes entering the water which is an area to avoid. Way up the beach to the north is the Ashmore Avenue main drain which is surrounded by a wooden fence. Keep clear of this also.
North of the Life Saving Club is a gravel path beside Beach Road. To celebrate the long association the City of Kingston has had with the horse racing industry, a statue of a horse has been erected beside the track. There are a number of car parks here including the well named Horse Paddock Car Park which have ticketed parking from 8am to 8pm. There is also a bus stop next to Horse Paddock Car Park.
Opposite Epsom Road along Beach Road is a huge shelter with three tables and seats plus two BBQs in a small grassy area.
Access for Dogs:
For the northern part of the beach (north of High Street) the following regulations apply:
Summer Foreshore Dog Regulations (1 November - 31 March)
- Between sunrise and 10am dogs are permitted off leash on sand only
- Between 10am and 7:30pm dogs are prohibited on sand
- Between 7:30pm and sunrise dogs must be on leash on sand
Winter Foreshore Dog Regulations (1 April - 31 October)
- Between 11am and 3pm it is an on leash area.
- At all other times of the day it is an off leash area on sand only.
For the southern part of the beach, between High Street and Mordialloc Creek, the following regulations apply:
No dogs are allowed on the beach at any time and the area is an intertidal zone which is protected to a depth of two metres.
There is 24 hour no dog zone all along the beach area including paths, vegetated and sand areas, although horses are allowed for swimming only before 10 am in front of Horse Paddock Car Park. Note: Dogs are permitted on-leash on the Beach Road shared path.
