Review:
This place is a real gem and is passionately supported by a group of volunteers. There is so much to see and experience. The best approach is to take a reasonably priced tour which covers some of the highlights and then wander around to the remaining areas.
The Homestead is not open every day and so some planning will be needed to make a visit during the week.
Apart from the restored buildings filled with objects from the past, there are some lovely gardens and lawns, a few picnic tables with a Yesteryear design, a huge farm machinery shed overflowing with old machinery, Smithys where you can see a see a blacksmith working at certain times and a huge museum with historical displays.
You are sure to find things that really spark your interest. Some of our favourites displays were:
- An old-fashioned outdoor dunny (which thankfully no-one has to use (or empty) anymore
- A massive Common English Oak from the 1880s which has a circumference of 4.2m (is great for a shady stop on a warm day)
- The Blacksmiths forge
- The first Ferguson tractor in Australia
- Furphy's Farm Water Cart (so good that a beer is even named after it!)
- Display of historic egg beaters / whisks
- A beech wood glove stretcher from 1875
- The Australian Women's weekly from the time of the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne
- Kiddicraft Miniature Capstan Navy Cut Cigarettes Collectors Item containing tiny plastic cigarettes (thankfully society has moved on to the point where these type of products are no longer produced)
- The baby-safe cot which halves a mother's worries and will keep your child safe from any possible harm including flies, mosquitoes, falling, injuries or boredom
