Moliagul Historic Tour
The name Moliagul comes from the Aboriginal term meaning wooded hill (moliagulk). Moliagul originated from its rich supply of alluvial gold, which brought settlers to the district with discovery of gold at Queens Gully in 1852. Moliagul was host to the largest specimen of reef gold ever found until John Deason and Richard Oates discovered the Welcome Stranger Nugget in 1869. The Welcome Stranger Nugget was found 2.5 cm from the surface and weighed an enormous 2530 ounces and was valued at 10,000 pounds. Reverend John Flynn the founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service was born in Moliagul. A stone monument dedicated to him and his work marks his birth site.
