Mitchell Shire Nature Reserves
Mitchell Shire has a wide range of nature reserves. They include:
1. Mangalore Flora Reserve (Mangalore)
Massed orchids in spring, Gilbert's Whistler, goannas and wallabies.
2. Coolabah Crown Hughes Gorge Flora Reserve (Tarcombe)
Glorious gorge and rock pools, koalas, trout cod, long nosed bandicoots, falcons, eagles, massed wattles in spring.
3. Seymour Bushland Park (Seymour)
Peaceful walks, wildflowers in spring (purple bearded orchids)
4. Australian Light Horse Memorial Park (Seymour)
Sunset walk, panoramic views, huge old trees. Heritage area.
5. Goulburn Park and New Crossing Place (Seymour)
Small but scenic river parks, birds, koalas and redgums.
6. Boulton Flora Reserve (Tallarook)
In Tallarook, at the end of Sanctuary Road - gorgeous spring wildflowers.
7. Horseshoe Lagoon Flora and Fauna Reserve (Trawool)
On the Goulburn River at Trawool - famous for waterbirds, ibis rookery and musk ducks.
8. Tallarook State Forest (Tallarook)
Picnic areas, Warrigul Rocks and reservoir are worth a visit.
9. Mount Piper Nature Conservation Reserve (Broadford)
Walk to the top! Important area for butterfly communities as well as wildflowers & birds.
10. Colin Officer Flora Reserve (Broadford)
Outstanding wildflower areas in Broadford.
11. Sunday Creek/Dry Creek (Broadford)
Walks in Broadford are important urban natural environments, and recreational areas too.
12. Strath Creek Falls (Strath Creek)
Gorgeous views and wildflowers in spring.
13. Mount Disappointment State Forest (Clonbinane)
Forest picnic areas.
14. Tyaak Flora Reserve (Tyaak)
Small reserve at the junction of Cunningham's Road and the Broadford-Strath Creek Road. Look for wildflowers beside the gravel road which leads to the north. We found a wide range of flowers of all colours (yellow, red, blue, white, purple, pink) in Spring.
15. Beckingsale Bushland Reserve and Old Sydney Road wildflower area (Wallan)
Go west from Wallan to see intact native vegetation, fields of flowers in Spring. The Old Sydney Road wildflower area is a narrow strip of bushland beside Old Sydney Road south of Darraweit Road. This area had a fairly good variety of wildflowers. Beckingsale Bushland Reserve, also called Wallan Wallan Bushland, has a parking area north of the area around #535 Darraweit Road (2.3km west of Old Sydney Road). Look out for the "Beckingsale Bushland Reserve" sign for the reserve north of the road. There are some narrow tracks through the grass with a range of wildflowers.
16. Monument Hill Reserve (Kilmore)
In Kilmore. Noteworthy wildflowers in early November. Outstanding diversity of fungi in late autumn/winter when all else is dull.
17. Highcamp Flora Reserve (Highcamp)
A rare jewel on the Northern Highway opposite High Camp-Seymour Road intersection.
18. Tooborac State Forests (Toobarac)
Ironbark plant communities, well worth a visit in spring. Search for an old ironbark tree, symbol of the inland. Located along the Seymour-Toobarac Road near Toobarac.
19. Puckapunyal and Mangalore Army Lands (Various locations)
Are outstanding nature conservation areas as well. Bush stone curlews, powerful owls. (Access by special permission only)

The vital living chain linking our natural treasures.
