Maryborough - Phillips Botanical Gardens
The Phillips Botanical Gardens is located in the centre of Maryborough and bordered by Napier Street, Inkerman Street and Alma Street. It features beautiful trees, shrubs and grassed picnic areas and is a favourite picnic spot.
The lake was originally a dam for the supply of water for gold mining. The botanic gardens was first planted in the 1870s. The lake has recently been redesigned to include a new wetlands area. It is also home to the growling grass frog which can be heard rather than seen.
Review:
Set around a smallish lake with water birds. A few garden beds, interesting trees, shaded and unshaded tables and seats. It includes the former site of a women's comfort station in 1957 - 2000 which has been converted into a garden display area housed behind glass.
The gardens are located next to the Goldfields Visitor Information Centre which is well stocked with pamphlets and information.
