Maldon - Whim Platform
There is a well preserved whim platform, mine shaft and associated mullock heaps beside Cox Track in Maldon. You can see the centre post hole of the whim drum and the narrow platform worn around the perimeter of the platform by the plodding horse.
A whim was a device for hauling ore up a shaft. It was a vertically-mounted wooden drum to which a rope was attached, and then passed over a pulley and down the shaft. It was wound by a horse, led around a circular track.
From Parkins Reef Road, follow Cox Track westwards on a rocky road which is accessible with a 2WD car. The whim platform is about 5m north of Cox Track near the top of a hill between Mantons Gully Track intersection and Ridge Track. See the map below for the exact location.
This is point 11 on the Lisle's Reef Walk.
