Lyon Housemuseum and Gallery

Lyon Housemuseum and Gallery

The original Lyon Housemuseum first opened in 2009. A unique, hybrid combination of a private residence and museum, the building is the first purpose-designed museum of its type internationally. Highly experimental, its new architectural form re-imagines the relationship between art and architecture, challenging conventional ideas about public and private space, as well as testing new ways of displaying and viewing art.

Designed by architect and collector Corbett Lyon, the Housemuseum builds on a long lineage of private art collections housed and displayed in residential settings including Sir John Soane's Museum in London, New York's Frick Collection, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice and London's Wallace Collection. Lyon coined the term 'housemuseum' to describe this newly created hybrid architectural type.

The new Housemuseum Galleries, which opened in March 2019, represent a major expansion of the original Housemuseum. Designed by Corbett Lyon, the public Galleries are the result of a $14.5 million donation by the founding benefactors, the Lyon family, and form one of the largest dedicated contemporary art precincts in Melbourne.

Offering a new platform for works of contemporary art, architecture and design, the new Housemuseum Galleries provide a series of spaces for international and local exhibitions and events, where new ways of presenting and experiencing art will be explored.

Led by a small and experienced team, the Galleries' exhibition program includes new commissions and works from the Lyon Foundation's permanent collection and inter-disciplinary collaborations with national and international practitioners and partners.
The expansive spaces of the Galleries provide a generous and inclusive place for visitors to come together to experience diverse, creative ideas while reflecting on the value of contemporary art, architecture and design in shaping our experiences, communities and futures.
