Guide to Sunflower Fields near Melbourne
Being immersed in a sea of giant yellow sunflowers brings joy and plenty of opportunities for the perfect Insta shot. The season is very short and typically lasts between mid-late February and early March. We have summarised the places where you can pick sunflowers or get the perfect sunflower picture below. Click on the links for more information.
A few tips for your visit are:
- It is recommended to check the check the website / social media site for picking times since picking may not be available at certain days or times
- Book online and early since the sunflower fields are enormously popular
- Bring your own secateurs/scissors and a bucket for taking your sunflowers home in
- Suitable shoes (closed toed) are required since you will be walking around a paddock.
- Don't forget to bring the sunscreen, hat and water.
- Be wary of snakes and bees
1. Pick Your Own Sunflowers Farm
Location: Navigators-Dunnstown Road, Dunnstown (near Ballarat)
Opening Hours: Generally open during sunflower season which is February - March. Opening times and days are weather and flower dependant. Check their website and social media for picking times.
Entry Prices: $10 per person, children under 5 are free
Flower Prices: $4 a stem
Dogs: Dogs are welcome, as long as they are on a leash.
Facilities: No toilets
Notes: No drones
2. Greendale Sunflowers
Location: Cnr Lidgetts Lane and Ballan-Greendale Road, Greendale (65 km north west of Melbourne)
Opening Hours: Generally open during sunflower season which is late February - early March. Last season opening times were Thursday and Friday 11am to 5pm and Saturday to Sunday 11am to 6pm. Opening times and days are weather and flower dependant. Check their website and social media for picking times.
Entry Prices: $5 per person (includes 1 Sunflower), children under 5 are free
Flower Prices: $2 a stem, seed packets are $5 each, secateurs hire is $4 a pair.
Dogs: Dogs are welcome but must be on a lead at all times.
Facilities: No toilets (nearest toilet facilities are located at the Greendale Recreation Reserve 1km from the field), cash only payment, no food available in the field but cold water and soft drinks available for purchase.

3. Paynes Orchards
Location: 372 The Avenue, Bacchus Marsh (55km NW of Melbourne)
Opening Hours: Depends on the status of the fruit season
Entry Prices: Adult (12 years+) - $5, Child 3-12 years - $2.
Flower Prices: $2.50 each
Dogs: Dogs are not permitted
Facilities: Pick you own fruit during the year.
4. The Farmgate Shop
Location: Settlement Road, Elaine (SE of Ballarat, 115km from Melbourne)
Opening Hours: From mid February to late March, every day 9am-late
Entry Prices: $5 per person, children 5 and under are free. No need to pre-book. Eftpos and cash facilities available.
Flower Prices: $2 a stem
Dogs: Dogs are permitted but must be on a lead at all times.
Facilities: 27 acres with upwards of 400,000 sunflowers. Cold drinks, ice creams and much more available from The Farmgate Shop which has toilets. Produce from the farm and local area is also sold at the shop.
Note: There are two dams in the paddock so children must be supervised at all times. There are props in the field for some great do it yourself photo shoots.
5. Woodlea Sunflowers
There are more than 150,000 sunflowers near Woodlea Town which should be in bloom in late February / early March. It is free to enter the area and view the sunflowers but please do not cut any to take home.
Location: Woodlea Town, 2 Lim Way, Aintree (41km north west of GPO)
Opening times: Expected to be in bloom for about two weeks in late February / early March. Check the Woodlea Facebook Page for up to date information.
6. Geelong Sunflowers
There is a field which has had sunflowers in previous years near Geelong. We have yet to verify that there are sunflowers this year. These fields are for photos only. Since this is a private property please stay outside the fences and do not take any sunflowers home.
Directions: From Geelong continue south-east along the Barwon Heads Road. Go over a railway track near Marshall Train Station and soon after the farm appears (before you get to Warralilly). It may be at the intersection of Barwon Heads Road and Boundary Road.
7. St Lukes Morwell Uniting Church Labyrinth
A labyrinth created from beds of sunflower plants.
Address: 281 Princes Drive, Morwell
Notes: The labyrinth is free to use but please do not pick any flowers. We have yet to confirm this is operating this year.
8. World's Largest Sunflower
3000 sunflower seeds will bloom into the perfect arrangement of one giant shaped sunflower.
Address: Mornington Green Legacy Gardens, 125 Tyabb-Tooradin Rd, Somerville
Entry Prices: $15 entry, children under the age of 10 are free
Opening Hours: Mid April
Notes: Includes access to the sunflowers, photo booth, lawn games and picnic facilities.
9. Western District Sunflowers
Pick your own sunflower days at a sunflower farm.
Address: 118 Leura Lane, Hamilton
Entry Prices: Cash only, sunflowers are $2 each or 30 for $50
Opening Hours: Typically Feb - Mar, weekends
Notes: Please remember to bring some pruners to cut your sunflowers
10. Sunflowers of Timmering
Pick your own sunflower days at a huge sunflower farm (one million seeds are planted).
Address: Cnr Thornton & Webb Road, Timmering (near Kyabram)
Entry Prices: $10 per adult and $5 for kids under 12 years. This covers your parking, entry into the fields, sunflower maze, and diving for lollipops in the grain trough. Sunflowers are $4 per stem or $30 for ten. Cash and eftpos available. Bookings not required.
Opening Hours: Typically February weekends.
Notes: Closed toe shoes are required, no dogs, toilet facilities onsite
