Location of Labyrinths in Melbourne and Victoria

In Greek mythology, the Labyrinth was an elaborate, confusing structure designed and built by Daedalus for King Minos of Crete to hold the Minotaur monster. Daedalus had so cunningly made the Labyrinth that even he could barely escape it after he built it.

In English, the term labyrinth is generally synonymous with maze. However, strictly a labyrinth is different to a maze in that a labyrinth is a meandering path with a singular path leading to a centre while a maze refers to a complex branching puzzle with choices of path and direction. A labyrinth has an unambiguous route to the centre and back and presents no navigational challenge which makes it a piece of cake even for those with a horrible sense of direction.

Labyrinths are an ancient structure dating back more than 4,000 years and were used for walking meditation or the site of rituals and ceremony, among other things.
