Lincoln Square South Playground, Carlton
The playground occupies a wonderful position under huge shady 150 year old Moreton Bay Figs. It's said that this location was home to Melbourne's first public playground which opened in 1907. Those pioneers of our city would be eyes agog at what the city has provided for their kids in 2021. Current day kids will also be excited and impressed at this inner city gem.
The playground has been designed to provide imaginative nature play for a wide range of ages.
The main highlight are two wooden cubbies perched on top of high poles and separated by a long rope net bridge. Getting up to the cubbies will take a certain level of climbing skills and bravery. The lowest cubby can be reached by a rope net ladder and the higher cubby by a vertical rope tunnel ladder. A big metal tunnel slide thunders from the highest cubby.
Scattered around the base of the trees is a nice inter-meshed log balance area, some vertical tree stumps to climb, tunnel carved from a tree stump, cute wooden cubby, vertical metal poles to hit and make music, wobbly walkways, speak and listen system, birds nest swing, small steep metal slide and two standard swings. Check out the labels painted on the logs since they were salvaged by the council from various city locations and marked with the type of wood and original location e.g. Grattan Street Elm.
Boardwalks run across the playground area under the trees and there are plenty of shady seats. On the side are two unshaded tables, BBQs and water tap. Also toilets and some grassy areas. Parking can be difficult so it's probably best to use public transport to get here. There are grassy areas and an interesting water feature nearby.
