Lake Charm - Kangaroo Lake
Kangaroo Lake is one of the largest and deepest permanent freshwater lakes supplied by the Torrumbarry Irrigation System. It lies on the western side of the Murray Valley Highway between Swan Hill and Kerang.
The Right Honourable Sir John Grey Gorton who was Prime Minister from 1968 to 1971 was born at Kangaroo Lake. Gorton's Drive and Gorton's Point were named after the Gorton Family. Another former Kangaroo Lake resident, Dr Stanley Argyle, went on the become Premier of Victorian from 1932 - 35 and then knighted as Sir Stanley Argyle.
Kangaroo Lake is very popular for recreational boating and water sports such as fishing, swimming and canoeing. Camping is not permitted. The north end of the lake is popular for day visitors with grass and shaded picnic spots and suitable for swimming, kayaking and fishing. As one of the largest and deepest of the lakes, it's also great for waterskiing.
Facilities available at the lake are a large grassed area, car parking, boat ramps (there is a boat ramp at the Kangaroo Lake Caravan Park and also on the west side at Gorton Point), playground, toilets and a wood-fired BBQ.
The west side of the lake is bordered by residences and vineyards with the grapes destined for Brown Brothers' wines.
