Koonung Creek Reserve Dog Off Leash Area (Balwyn North)
The reserve is huge and follows the walls of the Eastern Freeway for 2.2 km. The western border is near the intersection of Mountain View Road and Viewpoint Road and a number of streets border the reserve along its length including Kosciusko Road, Carron Street, Wilburton Parade, Gardenia Road and Koonung Street. The eastern border is at Doncaster Road.
There is a bin in the north west corner of the reserve along the Koonung Trail at the northern end of Mountain View Road. The area north of Kosciusko Road has a concrete walking track and beside that is a huge grassy area bordered by trees on the south and north sides.
You do get quite a lot of noise from the Eastern Freeway but after a while you tend to get used to it. The Koonung Trail runs along the north side close to the freeway walls. The trail leads to the west to Bulleen Road and to the east to Doncaster Road. A gravel walking track runs roughly parallel to the trail.
Around the point where the north end of Balwyn Road touches the reserve there is a shelter with tables and seats plus a bin. As you progress to the east, you come across clumps of trees and there is a water tap with a bowl.
About 1km east of Mountain View Road (western border), the path branches. One branch passes under an arch and then onto a pedestrian bridge across the Eastern Freeway. The other branch continues along the reserve and passes a fenced off wetlands area with a bridge across it. On the south side of the bridge is another shelter with table and seats plus a bin. Slightly to the east is an outdoor gym and a second bridge across the wetlands area. Another outdoor gym is 100m further to the east.
A bit further to the south east is a decent fenced playground with a shelter, BBQs, bin. Outside the fenced area is a water tap with bowl, toilets and bike repair station.
After another 650m you reach the end of the reserve at Doncaster Road.
