Knox Street and Public Art
Knox has long been committed to integrating relevant and inspiring artworks into its parks, trails and local places. The council's aim, via its Public Art Implementation Plan, is to ensure that public art continues to be an integral part of Knox's identity. The six themes of the plan are Place, Process, Preservation, Promotion, Provision and Participation. The plan promotes public art as accessible to everyone, connecting
people and places.

Bol D'Or Trail - Racing the Bol D'Or
'We wriggled on saddles ... Called for more food ... Just to break the infernal turning to the left.' Oppy
Allez, allez, allez, allez, Opperman! In 1928, Hubert `Oppy' Opperman won the Bol D'or - a paced 24 hour fixed-wheel bike race around the Monterouge velodrome in Paris; France.
When the chains on both of Oppy's track bikes broke, he continued on a standard road bike provided by his interpreter. With Oppy ten laps down and losing ground rapidly, the supportive French crowd, suspecting sabotage, shouted at the other competitors.
By the time Oppy remounted his repaired bike, he trailed by 17 laps, but with extraordinary skill and stamina regained the lead. 'The rider with the heart of a lion' rode a record-breaking 910 km in 24 hours. Encouraged by the huge crowd, Oppy continued for 79 minutes to break the record for 1,000 km.

by Community groups: Bayswater West Primary School, Bayswater Park Cricket Club, Bayswater Strikers Soccer Club, 1st Bayswater Scout Group, Bayswater Bowls Club, Blue Hills Pre-School, Clarendon Grange Aged Care, Local residents
Artists: Michelle Stewart (bronze, clay & glass works) Sarah Hammond (Poetry) Veronica Holland (2014)
Mixed media work spread throughout reserve. Through poetry, painting and bronze clay workshops local residents expressed their ideas and experiences of play.
"Play" was a community art project facilitated in 2014 by Knox City Council in collaboration with Bayswater West Community Hub. Through poetry, painting and bronze clay workshops local residents expressed their ideas and recalled their experiences of play.
These beautiful works have been transformed into permanent pieces under glass, on aluminium and bronze plates, onto rocks, logs, concrete arid pillars. A small sculpture, created by artist Michelle Stewart, was also made to represent groups that often play at Guy Turner Reserve, together with the classic symbol of nature, and regularly used play object, the tree.

Central Green Housing Estate Mosaic Story Seat
by Leanne Mooney, Sarah Hammond, local residents
A seat made from porcelain, concrete and bricks. The sign next to the seat says "The story seat came into being built on the stories of the people who created it. Stories of joy, of sorrow, of hopes and dreams. Through tears and laughter we shared tales of our children, our families, of love, pain, pets, travels, wonders and wisdoms. We bonded over piles of broken tiles as we pieced together a whole piece of art. And the art is glorious. It embraces colour and radiates life. The Story Seat is a place to meet, to sit and talk, or simply to reflect. And like the mosaic vine which encircles the seat, the stories told there will weave our life's together. The Story Seat sits on the village green. It invites you to come and tell your story."
